Interview: Trainer Evonne Converso from Lucille Roberts Bayshore

August 16, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Evonne Converso has been a personal trainer for ten years–all of them at Lucille Roberts! She is one of our best trainers and works with women at Lucille Roberts Bayshore. She’s also “happily married and a mother of three”, so she understands the needs of women who are juggling fitness with family and work. Read on to learn more about Evonne!

What inspired you to become a trainer?
Before I became a trainer, I was an accountant. After having my son, I decided to switch careers. Becoming a personal trainer gave me not only the ability to have flexible hours but also the opportunity to do something I loved.

What’s the hardest part of your job?
This is truly a tough question because there is no hard part. I love every minute of it. I look forward to each day. My clients become like family. I often receive text messages with photos of the scale, showing how much weight they lost, or of a healthy dinner they may be eating. Sometimes I receive messages saying how they want to eat something bad, and I remind them how many calories it might be and what they have to do to burn it off. I receive calls when they are sad or when something exciting happened in their lives. Each and every client is important to me.

What do you love about your job?
I have to say everything.  I love the people I work for and work with. They are like my second family. I love meeting new people. There is not a day that goes by that I am not laughing and smiling with a client. We immediately become friends even though at times they may hate me. I push them a bit harder then they push themselves, but I see their potential. I try to motivate them, but at the same time they inspire me all the time.  They work hard, and they overcome every obstacle I put in front of them or life throws at them. They change not only physically but emotionally. They become strong and confident, and I love that I am a part of that!

How do you decide what exercises each client should do?
Each client is different. A consultation is always needed to see what their goals are and what their limitations might be.

Where do you get new ideas for training routines?
I get new ideas for training routines everywhere. Often clients ask if I stay up nights dreaming of new ways to torture them . Yes is the answer! Each session is different and challenging.

How do YOU work out?
I start each day with a morning run. I wake up early, get my sneakers on, and I am out the door. That starts my day. I like to challenge myself all the time. I believe you have to practice what you preach, so I make sure I do not miss workouts and that I eat right.

What’s your secret for helping clients get such great results?
No secret, it is just hard work.  When you put in the effort, the results show. I give them the tools and teach them how to utilize them. It does not matter how old you are or what kind of shape you are in, we all have the potential!

What’s the best advice you have for women who are trying to lose weight?
Hire a trainer! I always hear, “I come to the gym, but I am not getting the results”.  When you hire a trainer, you will know the difference and see the difference. It is the best thing you can do for yourself and for your family. You will have more energy; you will look better; and most importantly you will feel better. I am a mother of three, and I can relate to all the excuses. I will keep you motivated while challenging you physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Get Fit with Instructor Tips: The Kettlebell

August 9, 2011 at 3:37 pm

Burn fat, sculpt muscles, and strengthen your core with this centuries-old training tool: the kettlebell.

The girya (Russian for kettlebell) has been used for hundreds of years to build strength, flexibilty, and power. A kettlebell resembles a cannonball with a handle and was once measured in poods (refererring to kilograms) ranging from 10 to 175 lb. Talk about strength!

Although kettlebells originated in Russia in the late 1600s, they are now hugely popular all over the world, including in the United States. The benefits of kettlebells include shedding fat, sculpting muscles, and increasing power with traditional, time-tested power movements such as squats and swings. However, if you have a weak core or back problems, such moves can be dangerous.

Your trainer can show you many differnet ways to incorporate this amazing tool into your workouts! Triceps extenstions to tone the back of the arms and overhead presses for the back, shoulders, and arms are just a couple of ways to use this versatile tool.

Kettlebells can help you get in shape and stay in shape, and they are a ball of fun–literally!

Interview: Lucille Roberts Trainer John Chung Shares Workout Wisdom

August 1, 2011 at 6:00 pm

John Chung is one of the best and most popular trainers at Lucille Roberts. He’s been with us for over three years; he started at our Gun Hill location in the Bronx and now works at the 5th Avenue gym in Manhattan. Currently, John also is training one of our Blogger Makeover ladies, Carol Cain of NYCityMama. One of his clients, Lucia Hodge, won the Lucille Roberts Train Rite Challenge in April 2011 (read about her incredible experience in her own words).

John is known for pushing clients hard and helping them get great results, but we thought you might want to find out a bit more about him!

LR: What inspired you to become a trainer?
JC: I always enjoyed staying fit. I appreciated and loved to play all types of sports and even studied martial arts. It was through martial arts that I found my passion for exercise, and, as I taught and trained, I saw I had this special ability to teach exercise to others easily.

LR: What’s the hardest part of your job?
JC: To be honest with you, I can’t think of anything hard about it—or maybe everything is hard, and I just love the challenge!

LR: What do you love about your job?
JC: I love how I run my own business. I love the interaction I have with different people every day. I love being in a gym, a space where I can jump and run around. I love to be creative with my clients’ routines, and I love the fact that I am a salesman, selling personal training packages. And I love that I’m learning something new every day!

LR: How do you decide what exercises each client should do?
JC: For me it all starts with three things: the basic exercises, the client’s limitations, and knowing how the client wants to be challenged. Keeping in mind these three things helps me prepare what types of exercises to use in the session. How the client feels in any given moment physically and emotionally effects what exercise I suggest, as well.

LR: Where do you get new ideas for training routines?
JC: I see new ideas and routines constantly during the session in my clients’ movements and what they say. Often, the clients’ mistakes in exercises spark my inspiration for new routines. Weird, I know, but that’s just the way I roll!

LR: How do YOU work out?
JC: I’m open to all types of workouts. Definitely how I train my clients has blended into how I work out. I have to admit, I think more about my clients than about myself. As I prepare for my client’s routine, I find myself sweating and kicking my own butt!

LR: What’s your secret for helping clients get such great results?
JC: I feel I need to do my best to challenge them physically, mentally, and sometimes even emotionally. But—shhhhh!—the secret is to help them believe they can do it. When the client truly believes, anything is possible for my clients and for me.

LR: What’s the best advice you have for women who are trying to lose weight?
JC: Keep on making goals for yourself. And try to find reasons why exercise is fun. A person who loves exercise will see the best results.
