Build a Better Burger — One That Won’t Bust Your Diet

June 29, 2012 at 11:00 am

Are you grilling this weekend? An average cheeseburger packs 319 calories and 18-23 grams of fat. You can build yourself a better burger with these great swaps.

build a healthy burger for 4th of July, memorial work, labor day

Trade the White Bun for:

  • 100% whole wheat or whole grain bun
  • Portobello mushroom caps
  • Sturdy lettuce or cabbage leaves

Pick a Prime Patty:

  • Upgrade your beef to a 96% lean cut.
  • Swap beef for lean turkey.
  • Mix chopped veggies into your patty for some extra flavor and fiber.
  • Trade in your patty for a portobello mushroom cap or a veggie burger

Trim Down the Trimmings:

  • Choose full flavor but low-fat: mustard, ketchup, relish, and salsa pack as much flavor as mayo with much lower sodium, fat, and calories.
  • Load up on fresh veggies, like tomatoes, onion, and pickle slices.
  • Trade out full fat cheese for a low-fat variety or avocado slices.

Recipe: Skinny Summer Ice Cream

May 30, 2012 at 7:00 am

It’s feeling like summer, and you may be feeling like splurging on ice cream. Before you flag down the local ice cream truck, give this recipe a try. It will save you a lot of calories and fat–and it tastes great!

Skinny Summer Ice Cream

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chocolate or vanilla Live Rite protein powder
  • 1 small banana
  • 3 cups almond milk (This works better dairy milk for helping the ice cream to thicken.)

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until consistent. Mixture should be thick and creamy, not lumpy.

2. Pour the mixture into a medium-sized metal bowl, cover with aluminium foil, and place in the refridgerator to chill for 1 hour. (Chilling the mixture before freezing allows it to reach freezing temperature faster once placed in the freezer, and it helps create a smoother ice cream).

3. Remove bowl from the refridgerator and place it in the freezer for 2 hours. Mix every half hour to create a “Mr. Softee”-style guilt-free ice cream in your favorite flavor!

For an extra treat, top with a healthy topping like crushed walnuts or chopped fruit.

Nutritional info: serving size = 1.5 cups; 325 calories, 2.5 g fat, and 17 g protein per serving.

Each year as my birthday rolls around, I search for an acceptably healthy birthday dessert to serve to my co-workers, friends, and family. You’ve loved the creative recipes by Ilise “Baker Babe” Reilly here on the blog so much that we decided to share more of her story with you! Find out how she gets such great ideas…

How did you get interested in cooking?

I’ve always loved to create, whether through artwork, writing, etc. As I got older, it was easiest to share my creativity with others through cooking. I played varsity basketball and softball in high school and would make team logo cookies and sports-themed cookies for home games. Before long, I was baking weekly batches of cookies, cakes, and pies to share in the cafeteria with friends.

Have you always cooked healthy food?

I started with traditional family recipes that I had seen being made while growing up, but as I became more and more involved with health and fitness, I began to modify my recipes to make them more nutritional. I know I’m on the right track with a recipe makeover when my husband can’t tell the difference between my version and the original!
