Dr. Emily’s Fit Tip of the Week: How to Reduce Muscle Soreness

November 3, 2011 at 2:15 pm

Whether you just finished a session with your personal trainer or took one of the many high intensity classes at Lucille Roberts, even the most avid gym-goer has experienced muscle soreness. Although there are many factors which contribute to muscle soreness, one of the most important is the formation of lactic acid in the muscles.

The good news is that you can help your body clear more of this lactic acid and thus reduce the soreness in your muscles by adding just a few minutes of core exercises to the end of your workout.

Interview: Dr. Emily on Exercise, Oprah, Body Image, and Confidence!

October 6, 2011 at 1:47 pm

By now, you’ve probably read many of Dr. Emily’s “Fit Tips” here on the blog, but you may still be wondering who she is and what exactly she does at Lucille Roberts. So, we asked her!

How long have you worked at Lucille Roberts? Tell us a little about your job here.

I’ve been with Lucille Roberts for a year and a half. I’m the Fitness Director, which means I’m responsible for overseeing the education programs, new classes, and program development for Lucille Roberts.

Have you always been active? Did you play sports growing up?

Since a very young age, sports and exercise have always been a major part of my life. Growing up, I did competitive gymnastics, which pretty much consumed my days but become a major part of my identity. Now exercise and fitness are not only my passion but also my career!

Dr. Emily’s Fit Tip of the Week: To Measure Your Body Fat, Measure Your Hips!

October 3, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Looking for a more accurate measure of body fat and lean muscle mass? One of the most common body composition measures, body mass index (BMI), is under criticism, as it does not assess bone density and lean muscle mass. Recent studies have demonstrated that a more accurate measure of body fat is hip circumference. Referred to as the body adiposity index (BAI), this measurement relates hips to height and actually offers a more accurate measure of body fat levels.

Want to calculate your BAI? Go here.

Women’s Weight Loss Chat Recap – September 14, 2011

September 19, 2011 at 5:18 pm

If you didn’t make it to last week’s online Women’s Weight Loss Chat, we hope you’ll join us at the next one. In the meantime, you can read below the highlights from last week, when Dr. Emily and trainer John Chung were on hand to field questions about working out.

Questions about Gym Equipment

Q: What execise machine makes you lose weight more–treadmill or elliptical?

Dr. Emily Splichal: I think the biggest thing to remember is that it’s not the equipment but the way you use the equipment that makes you meet your fitness goals.

John Chung: Yes, Emily is right. Also, it’s wise to choose a machine you like better and maximize it!

Q: I was doing hamstring curls on the machine, and it bothers the back of knees. Is that weird?

Dr. Emily’s Fit Tip of the Week: Fit Body = Fit Brain

September 15, 2011 at 1:43 pm

Did you know that your weekly Yogatone class or personal trainer session may be doing more for your brain that your biceps?

As we age, an area of our brain called the hippocampus shrinks a little bit each year, causing age-related memory impairments. Interestingly, a study by the National Academy of Sciences found that older adults who exercised regularly actually gained hippocampus volume. Participants in this study exercised for an hour a day, 4 times per week, and were able to increase their hippocampus mass by 30%!

Are you a student? Hit the gym the day of your next exam! Even just 30 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity will increase blood flow to your brain, which will improve your concentration and memory retention.

Or, you can try one of the brain-boosting classes at Lucille RobertsHIIT, Triple Fat Burner, and Turbokick are great options!

Dr. Emily and Nutritionist Natalie were in our online chat room to answer questions from our gym members (or anyone else who wanted to join in). The following are some of the highlights from the chat. If you want to view the full transcript, you can do so here.

This is what the chat room looks like:

Q: Which activity is best for losing weight–weights or cardio?

Dr. Emily: The secret to losing weight is not necessarily in the activity you do but in HOW you do it. Both lifting weights and cardio provide different benefits to losing weight. To maximize your time, doing a combination of weights and cardio in an interval-based workout is one of the most effective and time efficient ways to work out.

Q: Which is best for losing weight–low-fat, low-carb, or low-calorie?
